Breeding Notes:

What About Breeding...

With the ever increasing awareness of the pet over-population problem, the question of whether or not to breed is very serious. A dedicated breeder spends years learning about the breed, studying pedigrees and genetics, and striving to avoid breedings that may produce inherited health and temperament problems.

The dedicated breeder is prepared to keep the puppies for months until the right home is found for that special puppy. They carefully screen potential buyers, try to educate new owners and are willing to be responsible for any dog of their breeding for the lifetime of that dog.

The policy at Des-Mar is to not breed any Siberian or Shiba that is not show quality. We will not use any of our studs on an outside bitch that does not meet with our approval. To breed two dogs just to have puppies, also just because you have friends that say they want a puppy from your bitch is not good reason to breed. The only good reason to breed, in our opinion, is that you are trying to improve the quality of the Siberian or Shiba breed, using the AKC Standard.

Spay/Neuter...

Any Siberian or Shiba that is found to vary from the standard in size, appearance, movement, temperament, or to have known hereditary defects is not used for breeding. These dogs are spayed or neutered. Any puppy that falls into this category will be sold on a spay/neuter contract and AKC papers are withheld until the contract requirements are complied with. The use of such a Siberian or Shiba for breeding is evidence of careless, unknowing, and unconcerned breeding, we feel.

There are several important reasons for spaying or neutering your Siberian or Shiba:

  1. Neutered animals are normally healthier and usually live longer than unaltered animals.
  2. Spaying a female before her first heat season greatly reduces the risk of mammary tumors later in life.
  3. Neutering a male removes the possibility of testicular cancer. A neutered male will generally be more tolerant of other male dogs.

If someone is making a profit breeding and selling Siberians or Shibas, they are not doing it with the care and concern that they should be exercising. This unconcerned production of animals is not beneficial to the breed and is most often harmful. Again we strongly urge you to spay/neuter your pets.

Our Conclusion...

Finally, don't be in a hurry to buy your Siberian Husky or Shiba Inu. READ READ READ. A dedicated breeder does not continually breed puppies to make money. When you call a breeder, they may not have puppies, but are planning a breeding in a few months. You may have to wait up to six months to get that wonderful puppy and it will be worth the wait. If you don't want to wait six months, ask the breeder if he or she could help you find a quality Siberian or Shiba puppy from other dedicated breeders in or out of your state. We encourage you not to buy a puppy of any breed from a pet store. The chances are that this puppy has come from a "puppy mill" with no thought given to the genetic backgrounds of the parents. This means you are buying into potential temperament and genetic health problems you will regret later. We also encourage you to be careful about buying puppies from newspaper advertisements because there individuals that just put two dogs together just to have puppies and make some money. You could very well be buying into the same temperament and health problems mentioned above.

A last word, if the day should come that you can no longer keep your Siberian or Shiba, for whatever reason, contact the breeder of your puppy/dog. A good breeder is willing to take back your puppy/dog and keep it until he can find it a new home. If your breeder does not have the facilities and ability to do that, he should be able to direct you to the local Siberian or Shiba rescue club in your area which will assist in finding your Siberian or Shiba a new home. Please do not take your Siberian or Shiba to an animal shelter because the odds are that your Siberian or Shiba will be put to sleep and never find a new home. There are rescue shelters out there.....

Be patient and get a quality Siberian Husky or Shiba Inu. When you get that beautiful Siberian or Shiba, enjoy the many wonderful years of companionship he or she will bring into your home.
